IN this passage we have a most wonderful contrast between the living God and worthless idols. The people of
Idol worship is very common today - not of wooden statues that are no better than a scarecrow in a field of melons, but idols just the same. Fears terrify them, fears that they won’t be able to have what their neighbours have. Those possessions then become idols. It is God who is to be feared, not the idols of modern society. Putting anything before Him is idol worship.
Today many people have realised that material possessions and wealth can’t satisfy so they run after other forms of worship. Many of these come under the umbrella of New Age religions. They try to be in tune with the world of nature or with supernatural forces; there is a rise in the worship of the devil, spiritualism and forms of eastern meditation, but it is all idol worship dressed up in modern garb and devil inspired.
The Lord isn’t part of nature. He is the living Creator, the eternal King. When we trust in Him we don’t need to be afraid of anything. Idols of different kinds will come and go because they have no life in them. The almighty God is still in control. We should remember the chorus
“God’s not dead,
He is alive.”
