Psalm 36

It isn’t surprising then that people generally have no fear of God. After all, they reckon they are good enough for the Lord. People say, “I know I’m not perfect, but I’m not all that bad.” The godly Apostle Paul considered himself the chief of sinners, and Jesus, in His parable of the Pharisee and the tax-collector (Luke Ch 18 vv 9-14), shows us that the tax-collector who had recognised his own evil understood far better than the self-righteous Pharisee how things are between God and sinners. Before we can have a high view of Jesus dying for our sins we have to have a low view of ourselves. We cannot hope to get better unless we admit we are ill.

The character and personality of the Lord are so different. He is loving, faithful, righteous and just. He cares for the whole of creation. He is equally generous towards rich and poor, high and low. He is the fountain and the source of life -and the life He gives His people is life everlasting.

David tells us that it is in the Lord’s light we see light ourselves. Our minds have been darkened by the shadows of sin, but when we come to know the Lord He takes away our blindness and his light floods into our hearts. Let’s not be deceived by a false inflated view of ourselves. Let us ask the Lord for a clearer view of Him and of ourselves today.
