Jeremiah Ch 49 vv 14-22
In our relatively settled society we tend to forget that crises can overrun us unexpectedly, as happened in the Second World War. This can happen to the Church as well as to other national institutions. In every town and city in the land we can come across great prestigious church buildings which once were flourishing but are now derelict and in ruins. Why should this be? Sometimes, though not always, it is the judgment of God because of the unfaithfulness of people to the Lord and His cause.
We are told in this passage that the judgment that was to fall on Edom was the Lord’s doing. It was He who “chased Edom from its land in an instant.” I think we are all, to a greater or lesser extent, guilty of leaving the Lord out of our thinking day by dat. When we watch a current crisis on television, we can easily become arm-chair critics telling the authorities what they should do. Yet we never think that the Lord has a hand in it. As a result, we don’t pray for poor, suffering people as much as we should. Prayer is a far more powerful weapon than any power a government can exercise. May the Lord give us the grace to send prayer messages to Him throughout today.
