Deuteronomy Ch 28 vv 58-68
This passage again predicts the events of future centuries with real accuracy. It points forward to the teaching of Old Testament prophets that, in the midst of the whole nation of Israel, only a relatively few remained genuinely faithful to the Lord. God’s people today comprise the world-wide Christian Church. Yet as we look at those who profess to be God’s people in our day and generation, many have no real saving knowledge of the Lord. For them the Christian religion is all a matter of outward practice. Ultimately the Lord Himself is the only one who knows who truly belongs to Him, but when we see church people today embracing practices that are clearly condemned in the Bible, we have reason to believe that they haven’t come to genuine repentance and a knowledge of His forgiveness in Jesus.
The dispersal of the Jews foreseen in this passage has become a reality with Jewish people in practically every nation under the sun. However, the Lord hasn’t abandoned them entirely. More and more are coming to faith in Jesus and the day will come when, as a nation, they will acknowledge Jesus as their Messiah. Let us never forget to pray for God’s ancient people, for Jesus became one of them.
